If he's a little bit of an adventurous eater, the Mitsitam Cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian is pretty neat for kids (and adults). You could also consider walking up to Chinatown, either for noodles or for pizza at Matchbox Vintage Pizza Bistro. Also a dessert/souvenir idea - as a kid, I always loved getting the astronaut ice cream at the National Air and Space Museum!

Sadly, the National Mall is not known for it's food choices. Each of the Smithsonian museums along the way have their own cafes and each are decent, but a little pricy. As others have said, the Mitsitam Cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian has the best food of them all with tons of choices. That being said, if he's a picky eater, he may not love it and it is pricy. You can check out the menu in advance to see if he'd like it. We like the Indian Tacos.

The National Gallery of Art has pizza and really delicious gelato, so my kids love it there.

If you are willing to walk and/or hop in the Metro, head to the United States Capitol or Metro to the Capitol South stop and walk behind the Capitol just past the Library of Congress up Pennsylvania Avenue for a block or two. We, The Pizza is very good and in the company of several other good restaurant choices. (If you walk or Metro to Eastern Market, you can enjoy great pancakes, but they also serve lunch).

In the other direction, head towards the International Spy Museum which is really cool (and fun for kids - especially the spy missions - they say they are for older kids, but my girls love it at age 10). They have a little cafe there that is really good. The Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant across the street has delicious food that adults and kids like with a more substantial menu than the museum if you need a few more options.

If you head to the The White House, your grandson may enjoy S'mores at Così.
