Hi Mary,
South of the Border & Pedroland came to mind when I saw your question. You can eat, shop and go for fun rides there. It's known as "America's Favorite Highway Oasis", located off I-95 in Hamer, SC.
If you like candied pecans, pecan pies, pecan logs and everything pecan related, stop at Sparky's Country Store in Marion, located about 47 miles from Myrtle Beach . Sparky's has a fireworks showroom, gas station, and restaurant too.
You may want to stop at Fayetteville , NC as one of the stops from Virginia Beach before driving further south. Visit the museums, parks and check out Cameo Art House Theater.
