Christie from Greece asked

Cycling in Vienna

Where can I hire a bicycle in Vienna?
Is it expensive? I would like to visit Vienna by bicycle for a few hours, not as a means of transport.

Thank you in advance!

There are many agencies that rent bikes - especially in the Prater park and along the Danube. On the other hand, in the historic center of the city and surrounding area has established the innovative bicycle called Citybikes. There 'more than 1,200 bikes at 110 bike stations in Vienna you can borrow it back at any of these stations - this way is easy to reach, for example, Stephansdom to the Palace and Gardens of Schönbrunn. An opportunity especially attractive for tourists: The Citybike Tourist-Card you can rent a Citybike two euros for a whole day.

The price is very low and the payment system very simple: in each terminal Citybike there a "cash machine" that allows you to pick up the bikes. You can pay with a credit card (MasterCard, Visa, JCB) or Maestro (debit) of an Austrian bank card. The first time you you have to register (the cashier will ask for a name, an alias) and will be charged 1 euro (this, again, is only the first time). From there, and you are free to ride bikes as often as you like!

- 1st hour: Free
- 2nd time: 1 euro
- 3rd time: 2 euros
- From the 4th hour to the 12th hour: EUR 4 per hour or part.

- Rate for bicycle found unlocked: 20 euros

The fee for exceeding hours or lose the bike is 600 euros.

Tourist Card

With Citybike Tourist Card for tourists in Vienna can use the service even without a debit or credit card Austrian. The Citybike Tourist Card can be rented daily at the following stations:

Royal Tours Reisebüro Ges.m.b.H.. Every day from from 8:11 00hs: 30hs and 13:00hs to 18: 00hs.

- PEDAL POWER Bike & Segway Tours. March 9:00hs to 17:00hs; April to October 8:00h to 18:00hs, from May to September 8: 00hs to 19:00hs.

The Citybike Tourist Card is also available in many hotels in Vienna.

This is their official website:

Thank you Damian! Do i have to pay only by credit/debit card? Not in cash?

You're welcome Elli! I've said it. The only way you can rent a bike with cash is buying a Tourist Card. Otherwise you'll have to do it with a credit or debit card. Good luck!

Hi Elli,

Vienna is very bicycle friendly and offers standard bicycles for a quite low price. At you can register for €1 and then check out a bicylce at one of 118 stations all over the city (see the map here).

You can check out  (via a terminal) from one station and return on another. The first hour for every ride is free, the 2nd hour costs €1, the 3rd €2 and from the 4th hour it's €4 per hour.

Alternatively you can rent a bike from €4 per hour at professional bike rentals. The best place to find those is here.

Have a nice time in Vienna,
