Day trips from Vancouver?

My friend and I are going to Vancouver as a 30th birthday celebration. We will be in the city for most of the time, but want to take 1-2 days to venture outside Vancouver. What are the best day trips in the area? We'd love to go somewhere where we can hike, walk, or just enjoy the scenery.

There are two great uphill hikes in Vancouver one is the Grouse Grind which is close to downtown and the other is up in Squamish called The Chief which lasts around 3 hours up and down. For day trips I would recommend Whistler and/or Victoria which is on Vancouver Island and would require an overnight stay. It's a pretty ferry ride to Victoria.

Squamish is great. It's a 70-90 minute drive from Vancouver along scenic Highway 99.

They recently opened the Sea to Sky Gondola. At the top, you'll find a suspension bridge as well as various hiking trials.

You get a great view of the bay:

Shannon Falls and The Chief (Stawamus Chief Provincial Park) are minutes away from the Sea To Sky Gondola. Both offer more beautiful scenery and hiking options.

Have a great trip!

Whistler would be a great option - you've got the gorgeous village surrounded by Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb Mountains, Lost Lake and Green Lake, plus you drive through Squamish which has The Stawamus Chief Provincial Park that is a great hike, as well as lots of outdoor activities. And Whistler has great restaurants and bars as well, ideal for birthday celebrations!

When I was there in 2009 my mom and I took a day trip to Whistler, BC We took a bus up in the morning and back again in the evening but you could totally turn it into an overnight.

While I agree that Whistler Mountain is absolutely beautiful and certainly worth a hike. It is still a touristy little mountain town that is not all that distinguishable from many others like it.

Now a trip out to Vancouver Island that entails an overnight stay in Victoria with a stop at Butchart Gardens would be like getting two separate trips in one.  Victoria is a nice little city full of unique character that you don't see to much of these days. Take a stroll by the British Columbia Legislature Building at night and see some of the original over 100 year old light bulbs outlining the building. Not to mention you can enjoy a nice ferry ride to and from the island.

Thank you,

I would suggest going to Whistler.  the scenery along the way is beautiful it's about an hour and 45 minute drive Sea to Sky Highway. There's lots of hiking, biking trails there also there is the peak to Peak gondola ride which goes from Whistler Mountain to Blackcomb Mountain very popular to do. Whistler Village is cool shopping, bars and art galleries etc. it's fun to walk around in the village there's no traffic there. Hotels are cheaper in the summer because it is a ski destination.

Without a doubt, I recommend Whistler. We are just returning from 2 nights there. It is beautiful. Lakes, mountains, hiking, cycling trails, beaches, good dining, etc.

If it's in the summer, nothing beats biking the trail system throughout Whistler
