So, a friend and I who share a common passion for abandoned buildings are thinking about driving cross country this summer. Needless to say, we want to see as many great abandoned sites as we can. Since we have no real time line or need to see in any certain place, we can pretty much plan as we'd like.
So tell me--what abandoned places should we not miss?!? Even if you think it's out of the way I'd like to hear about it! We're interested in creepy, beautiful, weird, and even haunted!
Cannot wait to hear your thoughts!

Most of the abandoned places I know of are on islands and are hard to access by road. Cumberland Island (the NPS operates aboat so you can get there) Fort Carroll Lightwhich I don't think is normally accessible and penikese Island which was a leper colony and there are tours there sometimes.
There are also lighthouses which are abandoned - Price's Creek Lighthouse (which you can see pretty well from the Fort Fisher Ferry) And although it isn't abandoned, Point Lookout Lighthouse has the dubious honour of being one of the most haunted lighthouses in America. Also the Rear Leamington Light on Hilton Head Island. (This is not the stupid fake Harbor Town lighthouse that everyone knows on Hilton Head)
Execution Rocks Lighthouse is another abandoned lighthouse although the tales about it are worse than the reality

I live just minutes from the abandoned North Brother Island in New York City, located on the East River between Rikers Island and the Bronx. The island once housed the Riverside Hospital - a hospital to quarantine patients with infectious diseases. The island is protected by the New York City Parks.
