Great Christmas vibes (aside of NYC)

We are a family with children (9&10) looking for a location in the states to spend Christmas. Looking for that movies festive feel but not NYC. We would like to be in the countryside prefer to have the best of both, nearby and easily accessible to city life with all the Christmas spirit of festive shopping.

I like Christmas at the Finger Lakes Region in upstate NY. Check out the following towns:
1. Seneca Falls - the town is said to have inspired the fictitious town Bedford Falls from the classic movie "It's a Wonderful Life". There's an It's a Wonderful Life Festival on December 13, 14 and 15.
2. Skaneateles - Charles Dickens Christmas. The celebration begins the day after Thanksgiving through December 23, runs every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 pm.
3. Liverpool (New York) - Lights on the Lake is a two-mile-long drive-through show featuring Land of Oz, fantasy forests, arches, holiday displays and more. Open nightly from 5 to 10 pm from November 14 to January 5.
The good news is you can visit all three towns while you're at the Finger Lakes. These towns are close to the Keuka Lake wine trail and Seneca Lake wine trail and Cayuga Lake wine trail. In addition, Niagara Falls , Canada is less than 150 miles from Skaneateles and Seneca Falls.

Mentioned in this answer:

  1. Seneca Falls (city)
  2. Skaneateles (attraction)
  3. Liverpool (New York) (city)
  4. Niagara Falls (city)

If you’re driving cross country, a good stop for Christmas might be Kohler, Wisconsin and The American Club for a festive countryside feel.
Then come through Chicago for the big city shopping and make sure you walk down State Street to see the holiday window displays.

  2. The American Club (hotel)
  3. Chicago (city)
