Other than when it is being driven to a garage for an MOT test/repairs it is illegal to drive or park a vehicle without an MOT on public roads anywhere in the UK. A vehicle without an MOT cannot be insured (all existing insurance is automatically invalidated) so, apart from the exception above, driving it on public roads breaks the law on two counts. 
When it comes to MOT costs, the type of car is irrelevant.
The official government website below makes it clear that the maximum cost of an MOT test & certificate (pass) or report (fail) is the same for all standard cars: £54.85. Garages may well offer the test for less but it is illegal for them to charge more simply for the test + cert/report. Any garages that do so should be reported to the Trading Standards department of the local council. Obviously, there will additional charges (parts and labour) for any repairs required to pass the MOT.
