How to travel to Uzhhorod and surroundings

Hi,
I'm travelling to Ukraine in the first week of September for a 11/12 days holiday with a friend. We will be flying in to Kiev from India and will stay there for 3 Nights, then will take a train to Lviv and stay for 4 Nights and thereafter planning 3 N in some quieter and charming place somewhere in Carpathians. We are considering Uzhhorod, Mukacheve and surroundings. We need to know the best means of transportation in this area and whether it is safe to hire a car and drive ourselves. We are open to alternative charming quieter small places option to visit.

1. It is pretty safe to drive the car, that would be experience close to Mumbai ) All major rent car companies operate here
2. I would suggest Bukovel/Yaremche instead of Uzhhorod if you want to get quieter "mountains" experience. Uzhhorod and Mukachevo are pretty small towns you can cover both in one day
3. You can get to Lviv by express train ~5 hours trip, definitely better than driving car for 7 hours and hire car in Lviv.

Thanks Anton for such an informative and quick response. After discussing with my friend who is not very keen exploring mountains and wants a relaxing time at some charming town within 3/4 hours of Lviv. Please suggest some cute town with beautiful architecture, having pedestrian streets (but not too busy) with lots of local beer and cafes. Does Chernivtsi fits the bill? Thanks once again for the wonderful response.

Hi! In this case Uzhhorod is better - it’s a bit different vibe than Lviv and Chernivtsi and the road there is much better. · (1 like)
