Tour group VS Plan on your own in Turkey

We only have 6 days to spend in Turkey and will arrive in Istanbul in Oct. Wondering if its better to travel with a tour group or plan on your own? We want to keep the cost down; however if its too much hassle to go on our own, we don't mind to spend the $$$. I was reading some reviews about Turkey and read that driving in Turkey can be nightmare as easily to get lost. Any tips for us would be much appreciated? Thanks ~

Hi Terri,

I, too, would suggest you plan on your own, public transport in Istanbul is very good and people are friendly so getting directions is not a problem at all. Cappadocia is another must visit, besides Istanbul and it makes more sense to fly from Istanbul to Nevsehir as it may take 8 to 10 hours by road. Once at Nevsehir, it's a short taxi ride to Goreme, where you could stay. Do check out the various cave hotels, they're a wonderful and unique experience.

Depending on how far you travel in Turkey should dictate the means of travel.  We flew on a Greek airline from, Greece to Izmir, Turkey, took a train to Ephesus, took a bus to Pamukkale and a different airline to Istanbul.  The bus system is extensive and very inexpensive. If you have time give it a try.  The trains are very nice.  Similar to a European train.  If you fly keep in mind you might have to pay extra for your luggage. If you have time to plan the trip yourself than do it.

The train information on this website was super helpful.

You better take a organised tour from a tour company, It will cost you less and it's hard to drive a car in Turkey. 'Ephesus Tour company! is highly recommended!

 Have a great holiday

Driving in Turkey can be difficult and time consuming and 6 days is not a long stay.  I suggest that you spend 3 days touring in Istanbul, and then take a domestic flight to Cappadocia and spend 3 days there, flying from Cappadocia to Istanbul on the morning of the 6th day, to catch an International flight home that early afternoon.  Domestic flights are inexpensive if booked in advance.  You would not need to participate in a tour for either location, as all that you might want to see is all well documented and taxi's are readily available.
