My husband and I are looking for a fun itinerary for a day in Tulum. Will be heading there for a day trip from Mayakoba/Playa del Carmen. Want to see the ruins early (10am ish), but how should we spend the rest of the day? We are planning to go to Hartwood for dinner, so we will have plenty of time to spare in between! Just the two of us, no major budget constraints and we love to bar/restaurant hop. Thanks in advance!
Instead of using the suggestions above which are really in Playa del Carmen or Akumal I would check out Cancun Adventures Tulum Xtreme tour.
They have everything from zip lining, snorkeling, kiteboarding, scuba, cenote trips, etc.
I spent about 6 weeks in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum at the beginning of 2014 and it's beautiful.
Tulum is set right on a view of the Mayan Ruins so if you're into that be sure to check out Mayan Ruins
The ruins are situated on a cliff overlooking one of the most beautiful, pristine beaches I saw while I was there and there is this awesome little beach bar that was right on the beach but 100% authentic.

Highly Recommended - Rent a car...see and do more in the beautiful oasis. Best if done at the airport, but most of the high-end resorts (love Secrets chain BTW) have a rental agency onsite. Even if you rent the car for a day, every adventure awaits you off of 307. It's a straight shot from Tulum to Playa del Carmen for the nightlife or have breakfast before swimming with whale sharks in Quintana Roo. If you decide on partying in Playa del Carmen...simply hit 5th Ave around 8PM...but expect to be there allllll night. Tons of food, dancing, hookah, cigars, shopping....you name it. Try Kool Beach Club and Mamitas Beach Club for daytime fun, but Coco Bongo or any of the beachfront clubs on that end of the strip. All covered over 2 miles. Then after a long fun night, get in the car and head to Xcaret. This way you can get all of your adventure in place...zip lining, dolphin swim, cenote diving, etc. Enjoy!!!
Mentioned in this answer:
There is a cute little market right outside Tulum. Spend some time walking around and snag some fun stuff-we got tons of hand painted glasses and all our little momentos for our friends and family before heading home.
On a side note-when we went we spent quite a while in transfer. Try to get on a direct bus or rent a car. Otherwise you may end up going from hotel to hotel to pick up people and then several miles out of the way to a transfer parking lot-
would recommend visiting the Dos Ojos Cenotes and do amazing diving... restaurants are a few over the southern beach area I remember
