Fun snow-related things to do on the CHEAP?

Hey everyone! My girlfriends and I are going to Tahoe this weekend, and we're looking for some fun activities to do without spending a fortune! Stuff like snowshoeing, tubing, cross-country skiing, etc (they don't want to do downhill skiing).

We'll be there for three days. Any recommendations welcome!

We love the Tahoe Donner Nordic Center for XC skiing and snow shoeing! Bring a picnic and sit outside by the fire pits after your outing. They serve beer and wine, so you can have a fun little apres.

One of the biggest cross county ski areas Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, is just 15 minutes away on Donner Pass Summit. If you have dogs, they have trails that pets can run with ya while you ski. When its' a better snow year you can also cross country at Tahoe City Golf Course, Squaw Valley and Northstar California Resort.

On the other side (across fro Boreal) of Donner Summit is Castle Peak Run, a beautiful area to snowshoe. You want to make sure there is no avalanche danger, but the local shops can give you guidance. Tahoe Dave's Skis & Boards, The Backcountry and  The Sports Exchange are good ones in town for rental and conditions advice.

I would highly recommend snowshoeing.  Great exercise and you can easily get to some areas with fresh powder!   Truckee River Legacy Trail in Truckee is fun, try going off the main trail and down to the "single track" that weaves along the river.  The view is epic.  The trail is just south of downtown, access the trail from the Truckee River Regional Park where the ice rink is.  Lots of places rent snowshoes, like Tahoe Dave's Skis & Boards or The Sports Exchange.

This only works if it dumps snow in Truckee!  If it only snows higher up, check out trails near Boreal Mountain Resort and Northstar California Resort will have some good stuff too.
