You can definitely see the northern lights with your naked eye. They are spectacular. The best way to see them is to go to a very cold and dry place like Fairbanks, Alaska or Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. You must get away from the city's lights to have the best view.

January is considered to be the best month to see the lights in most places, because that is when the most hours of darkness are. It has to be dark to see the lights. In Fairbanks there is only 4 hours of daylight in January.

Even with the best of planning, seeing the northern lights is always a gamble and never guaranteed. You need clear weather with no clouds, and a well timed solar storm that interacts with the magnetic atmosphere. They are very hard to predict more than a couple of days out.

Good luck, and happy travels!
