Bobbi asked

is there a ferry

We're arriving Chicago O'Hare and want to drive to Lake Geneva and possibly Milwaukee. Is there a ferry across the lake to reach Traverse City?

Traverse City (Michigan)

I don't think you can take a ferry directly to Traverse City, but there's a ferry from Manitowoc to Ludington:

And there's a ferry from Milwaukee to Muskegon:

Assuming you have a rental car from O'hare, then maybe drive to Milwaukee, cross over on the ferry to Muskegon, and continue driving up from there.

What are possibilities of rough waters mid-September?

Ah, good point, definitely check the weather forecast. Both ferries may cancel service if conditions are bad. Lake Express is faster, but smaller, so it's more susceptible to rough waters. You may want to consider the Badger if you get sea sick.

S.S. Badger is the closest, arriving in Ludington. It's not the quickest, but a fun, nostalgic ferry experience.
