Had a few bucket list moments this year: Moscow Saint Petersburg (Russia). Absolutely incredible sights and experiences. But as I tick them off the list, more seem to crowd on - seeing the Northern Lights, maybe in Finland, maybe Canada, not sure. Going to Machu Picchu is up there, as well as Beijing with a side trip to the Great Wall. For the sheer wonder of it, I'd like to do Antarctica too. So many places, not enough time or money!

I can recommend travelling the "Highest Motorable Road in the World" through the Himalaya Mountains in Kashmir in northern India between Manali and Leh.  It's an amazing 475 km, 22 hour shared jeep/taxi ride over 5 mountain passes over 15,000 ft altitude with the highest at 18,400 ft at Khardunglapass crossing some of the most desolate yet beautiful landscape you will ever see on Earth. The journey has been featured on a TV episode of Outdoor Life Network but there's a big difference between watching it on TV and *being there*. The destination city of Leh is an absolutely amazing cross-roads of Hindu, Muslim and Tibetan Buddhist culture. I did it a few yeas ago for a cost of 8900 Rupees about US$190 make sure you buy your ticket directly from the booking office and not from a "travel agent" who will try to rip you off.  The jeeps leave at 4 am, the temperature at the passes can dip to -5C and you should be aware of the risk for altitude sickness.

  1. Manali (city)
  2. Leh (city)
  3. Khardungla (attraction)

Not sure that I will get to all of these, but they are in my top 10 "must see";

1)  Great Wall of China

2)  Shaolin Temple - Dengfeng, China

3)  Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora (how cool would that be to wake up in the morning and just jump right into the Ocean?)

4) Svalbard, Norway to watch the Northern Lights

5) Mt. Fuji hike

There are others, but they are mostly "love to see again" places, the above are those that I have not been to and would love to go.

May I suggest the geographically most extreme places. Like Ushuiaia Argentina is the southernmost point of land in the Americas and Urumchi China is the most landlocked city in the world (2200km to the nearest salt water) and the Leh-Manali road in northern India is the "Highest Road in the World" at 18,400 ft max altitude. I've been to those places myself. Good luck.
