I'm wondering how the road is from Taupo to Ohakune. Is it mountain or normal. Can I drive by car? Is it covered with snow? Is it safe with 4 passengers?
I'm worried if the car that I drive cannot reach to the destination, if the road is high.
Taupo to Ohakune is considered one of the top scenic road trips in north island New Zealand. Visit Ohakune, the official tourism website for Ohakune, listed this as a scenic route: SH1 Taupo to Rangipo, then take SH46, SH47, SH4 and SH49 to Ohakune. It would be around 160 km.

Going through this volcanic region you'll see Mt Tongariro, Mount Ruapehu and Mt Ngauruhoe. So, you can definitely drive from Taupo to Ohakune. However, during severe winter storms and icy road conditions, the roads may be closed. Check the weather report before driving.
