Cheap/Free things to See & Eat near Syracuse, Italy?

I am living in Ortigia (Syracuse, Italy) for a few weeks and am looking for free or cheap things to do, see, and eat while I am here! I'm a backpacker for a budget of 10 Euro or less.

Also - any suggestions as how to get to Mount Etna from here?

Thanks!

If you want to stay some time in the area of Taormina, there is Gianni House in Giardini-Naxos, a backpacker's hotel not far from the beach (and great pasta-evenings once a week on the roof terrace with Mount Etna view)

Mount Etna is a bit complicated to reach on your own by public transport in one day. Maybe you should consider to book a guided exursion.....Are you staying in a hostel? Then it shouldn't be a problem to hire a car together with other guests. You can drive up to Mount Etna to a height of 1.900 m, where there is already very much to see. The trip to the main crater area at 2.900 m (by cable car and SUV) costs - am sorry - about € 60. But it is worth it, believe me

Hi Lindsay,

While in Syracuse you should check out the amazing views from the Roof Garden at:

Des Etrangers Hotel & SPA
Passeggio Adorno, 10-12
96100 Siracusa SR

Have a drink/snack, or enjoy a pasta for roughly 12 Euro.

I hope that’s helpful!

Cheers,

Will
