I’ll be spending the latter part of this year in Stockholm for work and want to take the opportunity to drive around and explore the country. Can anyone recommend any great Christmas markets? I’ve heard there are a lot of them there and I figured I would plan my driving itinerary that way.
Well, as a student who went on exchange to Stockholm for a year, I was one of those people who really looked forward to the Christmas markets... and to my pleasant surprise, practically all outdoor spaces/squares, morphed into a beautiful well-lit Christmas market that makes the gloomy winter season felt so much better.
I would personally recommend the one in Gamla Stan. They tend to have wider variations of foods and ornaments here. However, as this is among the popular ones, it might get packed in the afternoon. Another one which I would also recommend is the one that is near the Nobel Museum, it is a very enchanting place!
There's a small Christmas market in the old town in Stockholm. If you are in Stockholm you can take the subway to Gamla Stan. It's rather small, so I wouldn't go to Stockholm for this event alone. But if you're there anyway it's nice. Opens last weekend in November, I think. Have a nice trip!
I would recommend the one in Sigtuna, which is a small very old city between Stockholm and Uppsala.
I don't know if Christmas is the best time to see Sweden. It's very dark. And cold. And I'm not so sure i'd take the car. It's far between the different markets. Train would be an option. For example is one of the classic markets Jokkmokks Marknad http://www.jokkmokksmarknad.se/home/ far away from the Skansen Christmas Market in Stockholm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=294J4xLdWdo
