Jaclyn from Angelika Film Center & Cafe asked

One day itinerary help in Stockholm?

We will have one full day in Stockholm at the end of our cruise next month and we would love to do a self guided walking tour of the city.

Where is a good starting place? Can we walk to destinations from the port area?

What are the MUST sees?

Any awesome restaurants for lunch we can stop in along the way? Cool shops?

Any suggestions for a great walking tour route would be amazing.

Many thanks in advance!

Hello Jaclyn!

Do you know which port you'll arrive to? Most cruise ships arrive to Stadsgården/Tegelvikshamn and that's just 10 minutes walk to Slussen T-bana, a central part and one of the main subways stations in Stockholm. If that's the case, then I would suggest that you choose one of these walks:

1. Explore Södermalm, the part of Stockholm that is full of art, vintage, hipsters, galleries, small shops, bars and restaurants! Head south, along Götgatan with lots of shops, ice cream, cafés, old houses and more. If you eat fish and want to try something more traditional Swedish, walk towards Melanders Fisk & Restaurang i Söderhallarna AB. It's a restaurant inside a small shopping mall. It might not look that fancy but the food is great. Medium prices. Afterwards, turn east and walk on Skånegatan and the surrounding area towards Nytorget with shops, food, vintage and small parks. Walk north along Skånegatan until you reach Erstagatan and head north on it until you reach Fjällgatan. It's a bit steep but it will give you breathtaking views over Stockholm! Head back towards the cruise ship and make a final stop at Fotografiska (mostly contemporary photography, great exhibitions!). If you are hungry, they have a café and restaurant.

2. You could also choose to walk towards Gamla Stan (the Old town of Stockholm). Alleys, shops, squares, restaurants, typical tourist kitsch and so on. Stroll around there, maybe have a look at the Royal castle. If you are up for it, walk towards Sergels torg, which some would say is the heart of Stockholm. But since you are from New York, you might find it a bit small. :) Lots of shops and people! Also, Kulturhuset (house of culture) might have some exhibit you'll enjoy. Continue towards the park Kungsträdgården, maybe walk a bit further to have a look at the pompous The Royal Dramatic Theatre in gold and white, turn back to Kungsträdgården and take Strömbron back towards the old town. Walk along the water back to the port.

Have a great time in Stockholm!

If you have the time I'd also suggest the Vasa museum (Vasamuseet on the map)
