Tom from Oakland asked

Day trips from Stockholm?

Hey I'll be in Stockholm for 9 nights in mid June, looking for cool things to do in and around Stockholm or nearby. Any advice from day trips to night life would be greatly appreciated!

My budget is slightly above cheap.
I'll have one friend with me.

As mentioned, Mariefred is a great choice. Rent a car or go there by boat or train. Great food at Gripsholms Värdshus and Gripsholm Castle is well worth a visit (make sure to look at the badly stuffed lion - it's hilarious!) From Mariefred you can go by boat, train or car to Taxinge Slottscafé AB (small castle with a café that claims to have the widest selection of cakes and pastry in all of Europe. They also have a beach).

Boat trips in the archipelago is as mentioned another great day trip. If you do not wish to go that far, Fjäderholmarna is a great option. Small island really close to Stockholm, accessible by boat.

In mid June it will probably be quite warm. Make sure that you go for a swim somewhere in Stockholm! This is one of the greater qualities of this town: the water is so clean that you can go for a swim right in the middle of the city. Best beaches are Oxhålsbadet (a bit of but less crowded), Tanto strandbad (nearby metro station Hornstull. It's recently renovated with new docks and has a sandy beach) and Långholmens strandbad (just by the old prison of Långholmen). There are several other places as well. If you have a car or are willing to travel by bus or metro there are plenty of options. This website lists all official beaches in Sweden:

Other tips:

  •  Mariatorget with lots of bars, food and some shopping. Have a beer/drink at Hotel Rival AB or eat amazing ice cream at StikkiNikki Mariatorget.
  • Gamla Stan - the old town. Small alleys, the royal castle, old houses and overpriced tourist kitsch. Eat at Pharmarium (an old pharmacy - quite an experience and their cocktails are something extra) or drink beer at Monks Porter House.
  • Go shopping at Götgatan. Start by Slussen and walk all the way to Skanstull. Swedish brands like Cheap Monday but also a lot of other stuff.
  • Gröna Lund - amusement park with concerts during the summer. But since you're from the US you might find the park quite small and lame. ;) Nearby you'll also find Abba The MuseumSkansen (outdoor museum with some animals - mostly attracts families and older people) and some other museums/attractions. The area is called Djurgården. This huge park that is popular during the summer.

And since you're going in mid June you'll probably be in Stockholm during Midsummer. This is quite interesting since parts of the city is completely empty (like, post-apocalyptic empty) due to the fact that lots of Stockholmers leave for the countryside to dance around a great fallos symbol, put flowers in their hair, dance a famous frog-dance, get drunk, wreck their marriages and/or get involved in some other kind of drama. This means that you and you're friend will have beaches, bars and restaurants almost to yourself during the 19-20th of June. Have a great time in Stockholm!

Hi. One thing I can really recommend is to take a regular boat into the archipelago. There are some routes that are not to expensive and a really nice day trip. Bring a picnic and you are set for the day.
