I'm going to be in Sterling Heights next month and will be on a pretty tight budget. I'm looking for the best free and inexpensive things to check out! I love the outdoors, art, museums, you name it. Thanks!
Hi! If you haven't been here before, Sterling Heights is a suburb of Detroit. Everything is relatively close here. A 45-minute drive gets you just about anywhere. If you like concerts, check out the Freedom Hill Amphitheatre and DTE Energy Music Theatre. Both offer lawn seats which aren't too expensive. There is also the Meadow Brook Music Festival, an outdoor concert venue, and Meadow Brook Hall & Gardens, a mansion once owned by Matilda Dodge whose husband was a lumber magnate. They typically have a summer tour program. Another great place to visit is The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. The Detroit Zoo is worth a visit as is the Detroit Institute of Arts. The Zoo is in a suburb, the museum is in Detroit. If you can splurge a bit, take in a Detroit Tiger's baseball game at Comerica Park. It's a great ballpark and you can usually find reasonable tickets at StubHub a day or two in advance. Six Rivers Regional Land Conserv offers kayak and biking excursions. Check out their website (https://www.sixriversrlc.org/) and say hello to my high school friend Betsy! Not sure if you can rent equipment or have to bring your own which may be an issue for you. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have specific activities in mind and I'll do some research. At least I'll recognize what's worth your time and what isn't.
