Katie from Los Angeles asked

What's the best neighborhood in St. Louis for a first time visitor?

I've never been to St. Louis and I'm a little overwhelmed by all the hotel options. I'd like to stay in a hotel that is central and gives me good sense of what St. Louis is like. I'd love to know where locals tell their friends to stay when they visit, and why those areas and hotels are special. thanks!

I send my friends to the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at The Arch (Near Busch Stadium, Ballpark Village, and the Arch, all within walking distance) , The Chase Park Plaza(Chase is middle city, in Central West End and accessible to to Forest Park, and lots of bars and restaurants on Maryland Ave., also within walking distance) or the Moonrise Hotel in University City (A little more funky than the other two and located in the Delmar Loop- a fun entertainment District) All depends on your budget.

The Historic Soulard Neighborhood is nestled between Anheuser-Busch, Inc and Downtown.  It has beautiful historic homes, apartments and over 25 restaurants and bars! Several Air B&B's are available to check it out and get a feel for it.

I would suggest staying around the periphery of town. Westport Plaza area, Fenton (Missouri), Chesterfield (Missouri). While St. Louis has some wonderful things to do and places to go, I would plan activities away from the downtown area after dark, or consider taking Uber in. We have fabulous restaurants, great free St. Louis Zoo, Science Center, City Museum. Unfortunately our down town area is not as safe as it once was after dark. If you want to stay closer to city area Moonrise Hotel in the University City (Missouri) area is cool. Rooftop bar there in the summer and fun quirky area to walk around.

Chesterfield (Missouri) or Saint Charles (Missouri) are both areas to stay that will be close to area attractions and close to highways to take you to the downtown area of St. Louis. St Charles Old Town area is amazing. You can stay at the Ameristar Casino Resort Spa St. Charles and be very close to the restaurants and shops of Old Town St. Charles. Cool area with cobblestone streets. From there you can take Hwy 70 or Hwy 40 to get to the Gateway ArchScience CenterSt. Louis Zoo, which is free to go. Many things to do in the city but I would not recommend to stay in the city. Safe for day trips but can be a problem in areas if walking at night.

Stay in the Chesterfield area. Stay away from City of St Louis. Only go with several people to the Arch, Union Station or anywhere  downtown..

I'm from the area, so staying Downtown St. LouisForest Park Southeast, or Clayton (Missouri) areas are a good start. St. Louis is not very big, so most sights like the St. Louis ZooSaint Louis Science CenterSt. Louis Aquarium at Union StationMissouri Botanical Garden are relatively close to each other.
