Sri Lanka

Best way to spend three weeks?

I'm visiting all six island nations in the Indian Ocean, and haven't given a huge amount of research time to Sri Lanka yet. How much time should I spend in the north compared to the national parks in the south and in Kandy?

Do you plan to be 3 weeks in Sri Lanka alone or 3 weeks on all six islands? There is so much to see in Sri Lanka and depending on how much time you have there, maybe it'd good to consider what is has that the other islands don't. Sri Lanka has a beautiful coast, a variety of wildlife and parks, temples and some amazing Unesco heritage sites. We were there for 2 weeks filming for our travel series and were able to do and see most of the things we wanted to see:

- Safari at Yala National Park

- Surfing around HikkaduwaWeligama and

- Sightseeing in Galle

- A short stop in Colombo

- Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary

- A visit to a spice garden

- Negombo before taking our plane back

I know this is a lot and we spent quite a bit of time driving but we would do it all over again! It was about a week between the south and southwest coast, and a week between Kandy and heritage sites in the north.

ps: Loved Kandy and its surroundings

Kandy is kind of boring in my opinion. Spending a day is enough for me. The national parks like Yala National Park is probably the best as well as the Nuwara Eliya area and the beaches on the south west. Sigiriya and Anuradhapura are probably the best places if you want to get some of the history and old culture. If you like a calmer ocean, Trincomalee is awesome and has a lot of back story to learn about.
