Vicki from Naxos asked

where is the best place to stay over night on the way from Bologna to Split

We are traveling onto Athens then over to the islands of Nixos and Paros for 2weeks.
We like the idea of staying in B&B's where possible but not if only stopping over for one night.

Bologna (Italy) Split (Croatia)   Athens (Greece)   Paros (Greece)

Obviously Venice can be fun, and there are some great places if you are willing to stray a little from the direct route.  However I would consider Piran if you wanted a place to stop overnight.

We have decided to catch the ferry from Ancona to Spilt and stay for 10days in Split making that our base to do day trips around Croatia. Then flying down to Athens and staying over night before we fly over to Naxos, staying 12days on Naxos making that our base to relax and do some day trips to other islands. Then spending a few extra days in Paris going by ferry from Naxos then back to Athens for a couple of days before heading to Dubai for a few days on our way home to Australia. We are in our 60’s and not looking for night life mainly touring around via hire car in Split and a buggy and scooter on Naxos. We are a fun loving couple that would like to experience the culture more than guided tours. Cheers, Bicki & Chris (Australia)

If you do go through Ancona you can take a ferry from there to Patras.
From there you can drive to Athens and then take the ferry to Naxos and Paros. Both islands are beautiful and it helps to have a car. Generally it is easy to drive in Greece.

We have found when looking up hire cars it is very expensive to hire in one country and drive to another. We were wondering if we are better to ferry from Ancona and hire a car in Split then catch trains around Montenegro and other countries then train it to Athens? The cost of hire cars tripled if you drop them off else where. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

If you're taking the ferry to Split then Ancona is the obvious overnight stop and is an interesting historical city in its own right.
If you're planning on driving all the way then Trieste or Rijeka are worth visiting.
If you're prepared to go slightly off-route you might consider Koper or Opatija.
I suggest you use the long-established and reliable www.booking.com to research hotels with parking available for your date in the places I've mentioned.
