From Chicago to South Haven along the lake front, the total driving distance is 126 miles - a driving time of 2 hours and 40 minutes. I have not done this drive. My suggestions are from Google Maps. Leave Chicago and drive down to East Chicago on US 41 and US 20. Then there is a short section of I-90 and then US 12 and finish up with I-94. You could take US 12 farther, but it goes through the Indiana Dunes National Park and there appears to be an entry fee. Otherwise you can take US 12 most of the way. South Haven is 1 hour ahead of Chicago. I don't know what you mean by cheap. The amount of expense will be how much gas your car uses and whether you stop and spend money anyplace.

Jessica Thank you , Rosalie. I have done the drive before, I should have been more clear about the fact that I wanted cute cheap couple type places, along the way. Also 'must see's'
RosalieAnn I have no idea what a cute cheap couple type place would be. And since I have not done that drive, I guess I don't know of any, but can you give me an example? As for must sees - I guess Dunes National Park or Grand Mere State Park,
RosalieAnn or Old Lighthouse Museum, 1933 Chicago World's Fair Century of Progress Homes,
RosalieAnn or Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Pavilion. Most of the stuff along there is beach and hiking stuff
As Rosalie mentioned, the dunes are a must see. If you're from Chicago, you've probably been to the Indiana Dunes State Park (Dunes Nature Preserve). But since you're driving to Michigan, you should definitely do Warren Dunes State Park if you haven't before. The Michigan dunes are much bigger than the ones in Indiana, and it's more nature and fewer crowds, so I think that kind of works as a "cheap couple place".
