Im planning a 3 month trip through South America next year and don't even know where to start as there is so much to do! Any tips/advice on the best stuff to see/what to avoid and best time of year to go will be greatly appreciated!
Do night sky photography in Atacama Region! And the Salt Flats (Salar de Yuni) is on top of my list!
We recently spent two months in Colombia and Ecuador. The highlight was booking a "last minute" catamaran 6 day Galapagos Cruise. Not to be missed! Cartagena, Medellín, Bogota, and Salento in Colombia were all wonderful as were the Ecuadorian busrides to a variety of small indigenous "market towns", Mayan ruins of Ingapirca, beautiful waterfalls, cable rides and zip lining in Banos, river walks in scenic Cuenca (Ecuador), and historic Old Town. People everywhere are warm and welcoming. The local food was not as spectacular as hoped, but the variety of "international fare" is available everywhere. Enjoy!
Argentina is definitely worth a visit. Iguazú Falls is one of the coolest things I've seen. I loved Chile, Santiago is such a cool city. If you can, also try to take a trip to Uruguay.
