I will be backpacking in South America on a modest budget, and was wondering if there were any known cheap travel options or strategies, including preferred airlines and/or airports.
Hi Eric - firstly I would say don't fly if you are looking to do it cheap (unless of course you mean fly in/out of South America). There are lots of overnight buses that get you across long distances whilst you sleep - meaning you save on accommodation too! Cruz del Sur is the best company but doesn't operate everywhere. Do your research first as some places are known for hijacking or bad drivers/crashes. Don't mean to scare you but it's important to know! I travelled as a solo female and was fine :) Bolivia is one of the cheapest countries and beautiful so be sure to fix that it your itinerary too! Try to eat and live local rather than looking for western style companies/restaurants etc and take some USD with you - dollars can come in very handy for getting cheap deals in certain places as local currencies can sometimes be volatile. But make sure you check the conversion rate so you don't get ripped off!! Hope this helps a bit x
