Manhattan Beach

Matt from Manhattan Beach asked

Graet day time things to do in Solana Beach?

We are going to concert at the Belly Up at night... but looking for fun things to do in the area during the day. Any suggestions?

First off, the Belly Up Tavern is a great little venue. I haven't been down there for years but the last time I saw The Greyboy Allstars... they killed it. For daytime fun, the most obvious answer would be go to Del Mar Racetrack if the ponies are running. The season is normally late July through early September. "Where the surf meets the turf" provides for a great afternoon even for non-gamblers. Go check out downtown Del Mar. Plenty of restaruants, bars and shops to kill a few hours. Reminds me of Manhattan Beach a bit. If you're a beer guy, there are plenty of brewery tour options down there. Stone Brewing Company and Ballast Point Brewing Company are a couple noteworthy breweries.

Thanks man, great tips! We ended up staying across the street from the racetrack, went across and bet on the ponies. Awesome time! The Belly Up was a rad club, but unfortunately, Dick Dale (who we went to see) had a medical emergency and couldn't play.

If you are there in July/September, head down to the Del Mar Racetrack.  Coolest race track in the world and a great place to have some drinks, bet on the ponies, and spend some of the day.  If you want to really do the local thing, ride bikes down to the beach before (or after) the track. 28th street is a good place to shoot for.  Fish tacos at the Brigantine Seafood Restaurant are highly recommended on your way to/from the track, as well.

There are lots of great shops right there on S. Cedros Ave in the design district to check out during the day. There is also a great Italian restaurant near by called Crush. Try the bolognese!
