Candice from Waterbury (Vermont) asked

Climbing Mt Etna- do we need a guide or can we do this alone?

I am looking for recommendations for climbing Mt Etna. My husband and I are very fit hikers and we were thinking of climbing up ourselves without a guide. We don't like to hike up with a hoard of slow people. Is this possible, or is it a better experience with a guide? What is the best route to take?

Hi Candice,

my experience after living 10 years in Sicily is: if you want to see the most interesting spots on Mount Etna - hire a specialized guide. There are several agencies offering trekking tours of all levels.

Tough climb, but a beautiful one at that. I think it depends how long you want to go. Most tours won't do long ones, but since you're avid hikers and experienced, there is no problem doing this on your own. Take a cable car up and you will be on your way.

Also, be sure to check when you're going. In the later winter months, there will be more snow.
