I'm going to Shanghai and I'm really excited to check out the food scene, but I'm not the most adventurous eater. Where should I go for delicious food that I wouldn't be able to get in the U.S. but that won't scare me away? I'm willing to splurge but I would also like to check out some street food. Also, is there anything that I should absolutely try, even if it's sounds a little... unique?
I can only type in some chinese names, you could type into baidu map(google map not working well in China) to find the places(most of them are chain so food safety is ensured), and many of their dishes could be googled.
1. 小杨生煎(Yang's Fried Dumpling) many locations
2. 港丽餐厅(Charme restaurant, many locations, must try their desert - "蜂蜜厚多士", they should have smelly(chou) tofu - "臭豆腐")
Places for famous "小笼包" (XiaoLongBao, steamed small meat/seefood dumpling in basket)
(1) Longevity 万寿斋
(2) Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant(豫园路店)
(3) Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐)
(4) Jia Jia Tangbao (佳家汤包)
(5) Fuchun Xiaolongbao (愚园路店)
Some street food can be found everywhere: baked sweet patato(烤山芋 or 烘山芋), beef noodle soup(牛肉拉面), kabob(烤肉串, sometimes they have squid rather than meat), marinated meat in baked bun(肉夹馍) etc.
for image reference of the street food, you can try this link http://fashion.ifeng.com/travel/life/gourmet/detail_2011_10/14/9847099_1.shtml
