Just a heads up, Savannah is not ideal if you have difficulty walking. A lot of people take the trolleys, but the steps can be difficult for elderly or people using a walker. Also, you may have to walk a distance to get to various sights.
Things may have improved now, just make sure if you do a trolley tour that you double check if they really can accomodate your mobility.
If you use a wheelchair, there may be historic cobblestone streets or brick pathways to navigate. It's certainly possible, it really depends on your level of comfort. This page has some good reviews of wheelchair accessible places in Savannah.
For hotels, you might try something like the Hilton Garden Inn Savannah Historic District or the Hampton Inn Savannah Historic District. There are a lot of hotel choices, so it depends on your budget and where you want to stay.

We love to camp so we stayed at Red Gate Campground & RV Resort. It is 6 miles from Savannah, and we loved it there.

I would suggest that you take the trolley ride first. It gives you a great overview of Savannah and points out a lot of points of interest, great restaurants, and things to do.

I stayed at Planters Inn on Reynolds Square, a 6-minute walk from City Market and 3 blocks from River Street. You can check out the following hotels in the historic center:
  1.  SpringHill Suites Savannah Downtown/Historic District
  2. TRYP by Wyndham Savannah
  3. East Bay Inn  - located across the street from River Street. Close to restaurants, shops, and bars

For things to do, I suggest Old Town Trolley Tours and Savannah Riverboat cruise. My favorite restaurant is Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room .
