we were told that taking the ferry to Sausalito was a fun afternoon (because Alcatraz is booked..) what is there to do there and how long should we plan to stay? we have 2 kids (12 & 13) and a grandma with us and will leave and return from the Ferry Building.
Yes, we took the Ferry after visiting all the really cool shops at the Ferry Building. Sausalito was great and we walked around for a while and visited a bunch of shops and even did some wine tasting at the new Madrigal Family Winery Tasting Room. We had lunch at Bar Boccewhich was really fun and the kids got to play some Bocce ball. great pizza's but only beer and wine. We ere there on a Friday so the crowds were not bad at all.

Bar Bocce is a great place to visit. It's an awesome restaurant with a ton of outdoor seating, fire pits, and of course bocce. It's right on the water, and is very family friendly!
yes, that's a great idea. Sausalito is a fun little town, rent a bike and ride around. It's a beautiful town with lots to sightsee on a bike. Grab lunch at a local outdoor cafe and watch the boats nearby. It has a great view of SF as well.
It's pretty touristy…You might want to check out Tiburon and Mill Valley for a bit more local feel. Also, the master of activities with kids is Erica! If you do end up in Sausalito here is a decent guide to the sights and a fun Discovery place for the kids - http://www.oursausalito.com/fun-sausalito-activities.html
