Amal asked

What highway should I take? Where do I stop?

I plan to take a trip from Santa Rosa, CA to Austin, TX, driving my sedan vehicle.
Can you give me some tips on what is the best highway to drive? and what is the best city to stop and stay overnight (safety & convenience-wise)? I plan to drive for 8-9 hours a day. I would like to avoid crowded big cities, if possible. I never drove a long trip alone before, so safety is my biggest concern. My budget for the hotel is $100 per night
thank you

Hopefully others will chime in.  Looking at a map and the amount of time you want to drive each day, here is my sugguestion:

Santa Rosa, CA to El Centro, CA or San Diego

El Centro, CA to Lordsburg, NM

Lordsburg, NM to Sonora, TX

Sonora, TX to Austin, TX

My experience during COVID has been that small towns do not do as good of a job as mid size towns enforcing mask wearing etc.

Stay safe and enjoy the trip!
