best route from big sur to Sonoma

Going to San Francisco for the first time. Will spend a couple of days there and then drive to Carmel, stay a couple of days and the go to Big Sur. We would like to go to Sonoma before we go back to San Francisco. What would be the best route?

San Francisco (California)   Carmel By the Sea (California)   Big Sur (California)   Sonoma (California)

RosalieAnn is correct. First go north to Sonoma and Napa. Start by visiting the Headlands Lookout just over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, maybe hit Sausalito just next to it and then hit wine country.

From there, maybe San Francisco next for a night or two and when you are finished there, head on down to Carmel By the Sea and Big Sur. Don't miss Nepenthe for breakfast, lunch or dinner for sunset. It is beautiful... one of the most peaceful places to spend some down time. The view is extraordinary!

I'd go down via hwy 101. Taking the ocean route is beautiful but takes a really long time. Go on down and spend your time once you arrive.

Have a terrific trip. This is God's country!

Geographically speaking it would be better to visit Sonoma while you were in San Francisco before you drive down to Carmel By the Sea
