Half way point between LA and San Francisco on the Pacific Coast Highway?

We are traveling by Motorcycle on the Pacific Coast Highway and would like to stop halfway between LA and San Francisco.  We would prefer a campground with tent camping, but also need hotel ideas if raining because we don't want to set our tent up in the rain.  Thanks for the  suggestions.

Try Treebones Resort in Big Sur. Its a really pretty collection of Yurts perched up above the ocean. And they have two restaurants on premise that were really tasty.

A friend and I just did the PCH on motorcycles two weeks ago.  We left from Culver City and ended up at Pismo Beach on the first day (we got a late start).  We asked around about camping and some people sent us to Oceano, said we could camp on the beach.  I was worried about my motorcycle getting stuck in the sand but it no problem.  During the day people ride dune buggies in that area and they camp there at night.  It was really great falling asleep to and waking up to the ocean.

We would have loved to stay at Treebones Resort looked really nice.  It is definitely glamping (95 for campsite, around 300 for yurts) and everything there is two night minimum.

Cambria is also a good option a little north of Morro Bay/SLO, and you can camp at San Simeon State Park.  It's close to Hearst Castle and the elephant seal beach.

Here's another vote for Treebones Resort. The yurts are spacious and comfortable, the grounds and views are lovely, and the staff is super nice. Their Oceanview sushi bar is excellent, but pricey. There are some nice hiking trails and beaches nearby.

If you can drive a bit farther north in Big Sur, I also recommend the Fernwood Resort or the Big Sur River Inn. Fernwood has motel rooms, cabins, tent cabins, tent camping spaces and RV. The large property can be crowded, but it's centrally located to many Big Sur attractions and services and the Fernwood roadhouse has good food and live music. The nearby Big Sur River Inn has upscale motel rooms and quaint remodeled cabins on the Big Sur River, plus a good 3-meal restaurant that serves a great breakfast.

Here's a link to the lodging page on the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce.

I like the southern part of Big Sur, near Treebones Resort, or San Luis Obispo. Both offer beautiful views of the ocean and places to camp/enjoy the great outdoors. :)

Hi Micki,

Morro Bay is a great midway point and there's Morro Bay State Park where you can go camping. There are also plenty of hotels in the area, I'm not familiar with them, but a quick search on Google will show you alternatives to camping.

Happy travels!
