Scott from San Francisco asked

Best Dim Sum for dinner?

Are there any restaurants that serve dim sum for dinner?  I know it's not the customary time.  Preferably Chinatown for a location.

San Francisco (California)

Hi Scott,

I think Ton Kiang is pretty good. I've never waited too long and they are consistent.

If you can push up your time frame a little (they close at 4 pm on weekends) I would definitely recommend Yank Sing Restaurant. It is on the pricier side ($$$) for dim sum but I think it's worth it. Their Shanghai soup dumplings are great, which I thinks says a lot because that's one of my favorite things to get and dim sum places in the city never have them. There are two locations fairly close to each other, but I can only vouch for the one listed above. Reservations are definitely recommended.

Enjoy!

Believe it or not, I've never had Dim Sum in SF - despite living here for five years! I'm looking to go soon too, and have been sourcing recommendations from colleagues. The place I keep hearing about is Great Eastern Restaurant, but will follow this question to read the other responses that come through.

Glad you asked about this!

Well then you MUST eat dim sum at Yank Sing (the one at Rincon Center). It is by far the best I've ever had, and it literally ruined Los Angeles Dim Sum for me. That said, it closes at 4PM ergo the posting.

Yank Sing hands down, bit pricey but well worth it.

Hang Ah Dim Sum Tea House is where I'd go. They have really good roast pork buns and I like their bunny-shaped shrimp dumplings.

Thanks Andy. I just checked their website - and I can't tell if they serve dim sum during dinner or at night. I just wanted to clarify as most places shut down dim sum service sometime in the afternoon. Thanks!

I've been there around dinner time and had dim sum. However, I'd call just in case.
