Hello, I am traveling from Australia to San Francisco for a conference and I am looking for affordable accommodation in or close to the main city area. Just staying for 2 or 3 nights at the end of March for 1 person.
If you are coming to San Francisco for a conference, have you checked the conference webpage to see what rates they are offering at area hotels for attendees? Sometimes that rate will be better than what you can find elsewhere.
In the Union Square/FiDi/Moscone Center area, these hotels are decently priced for the end of March, coming in at under $200/night:
Courtyard by Marriott on 2nd St
Alternatively you can look at staying at an airbnb which should definitely be cheaper, but it won't come with the same amenities as a hotel since you are renting someone's house. However, it's a great way to explore while saving a little on accommodation.
Enjoy your trip to San Francisco!

Hotel rates within the city of San Francisco run about $200 /night to start. If you are willing to stay near the airport and take BART (Bay Area rapid transit- public transit) you can probably stay for about $100. Check the Best western Grovesnor Inn in South Sanfrancisco, a Travelodge or a Holiday Inn. These hotels are not fancy but they are safe. Check rates on hotels.com or other aggregators. If you are willing to stay in someone's apartment, Airbnb or couch surfing. Good luck and have a great trip.
