Taking my 16 year old daughter to San Francisco for the first time. Looking for decent hotel, around the $150-200 range. Only staying for 2 nights and want easy access to sight seeing. Yes, we are going to Alcatraz but other ideas would be appreciated. Really want to find good music/record store. We are going to rent a car to go north after we stay a couple days in SFO.
Hi! I'm not sure about a hotel to stay in the city, they can be pretty pricy. If you would like to stay outside of the city, staying near a BART(train) station would be ideal. Parking is difficult downtown! If you take the BART in to the Powell street station, you're basically in the heart of the city. Rasputin Music is a record store within a block of the station, it's a pretty neat place to check out vinyls etc. Also, this is right at the base of the Powell street cable car. It's around $6 and you can take it up the hill towards Fisherman's Wharf!
Their hotels are small, but try looking into some of Personality's hotels, such as Hotel Diva. Also may be able to snag a deal at a Kimpton or Joie de Vivre property, though they can be more in the $200 range. Definitely go to Amoeba Music for vinyl. If you're wanting a little more intimate and unique take on Alcatraz, consider doing the night tour.

Try Airbnb. This way you stay with a "local" and get better experience
Priceline! you should easily be able to win a bid for a hotel for $150 a night. Often times you will get the Hyatt Embarcadero if you're choosing a 4 star.
