Five Days in San Diego: What to See for an Active Couple?

A friend of mine is taking his lady-friend to San Diego in late Jan/early Feb. They've got about a week. Looking for any solid ideas, including must-sees and great local restaurants. They're not doing a blow-out trip, but they've got a decent budget and will have a car.

Looking for any ideas for them! Beaches, Lego Land, places to stay . . . Let me know!

I love the Torrey Pines Gliderport overlooking Black's Beach. Nice little restaurant with good sandwiches and salads and a killer view. Skip Legoland unless you have a kid under 10. Do not miss the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, wine tasting in Temecula, Balboa Park, etc. For hiking look at 50 Best short hikes in SD by Jerry Schad.

Day 1: go to La Jolla Cove to see the sea lions and seals, walk around L a Jolla downtown, and grab brunch at The Cottage / Brockton Villa Restaurant / or Caroline's Seaside Cafe. Caroline's cafe is my favorite, it's on La Jolla shore not La Jolla Cove, but it has great ocean view.

Day 2: SeaWorld for one day (Lego land is more for small kids or supre lego fans) / San Diego Zoo and San Diego Safari Park (Inside Gate). Safari wild animal park is my favorite.

Day 3: Visit Balboa park in the morning, many museums to explore.  There are also many places to visit near Harbor drive, like the retired Midway aircraft carrier and submarines. Go see Cabrillo National Monument in the afternoon, it can oversees the whole SD and the bay, and fabulous sunset view.

Day 4: Feb would be a good time for whale watch / book in advance through Groupon.

Day 5: Go to Del Mar or Coronado Island, enjoy the beach and sunshine. Many good restaurants at both places.

Seaport Village is a great walk, there are cute little shops to walk in and out of and is right along the water.  If you are a history buff, keep walking north of the shoreline for about 5-10min, the USS Midway Museum is a retired battleship that offers walking tours throughout the ship. The Unconditional Surrender statue (statue of sailor kissing his gf nurse) is also there to see. Pappalecco Gelato is a cute small cafe. Delicious gelato ice cream, Nutella was my fav.

Coronado Islandis a good stop to visit. The historic Hotel Del Coronado is a fun visit.  The beach is within walking distance and the sand is fine.
