Katie from Los Angeles asked

Best free things to do in San Antonio?

I'm going to be in San Antonio next month and will be on a pretty tight budget. I'm looking for the best free and inexpensive things to check out! I love the outdoors, art, museums, you name it. Thanks!

Check out the McNay Art Museum if you have your student ID still, it's free. Also, walking down the Riverwalk at night, although most of those bars are expensive. A great affordable hip place is Moses Roses on the weekend! If you're going and it's the first friday of the month from downtown to south town (it's super artsy and fun).. you NEED to try san antonio pub run (just google it). It's probably the most happenin' night all month and there's always a theme. the Japanese Tea Gardens are free and beautiful. Rent a bike at the Pearl Stable and ride to King William district, it's a great way to spend the day. Make sure to check Groupon for cool affordable activites to do downtown or around San Antonio.

The Riverwalk, for sure! Check out the north and south parts that are away from the downtown area. You can rent an electric B cycle and ride south to the Missions which are free. Some of the museums have free admission days. Walking around the King William district is always fun too.

Best website for help is visit san antonio. You can find coupons and such there. There is also a groupon for a city bus tour that's cheap. The Alamo is free and then you can walk across the street and walk down the infamous Riverwalk (free). Down by the zoo are the Japanese Tea Gardens and that's just a pretty area to walk around, and there is a cute little train you can ride that's about $5, it's for kids, but still fun. You can tour the SAS factory for free and it has a cute general store, but the area around it is not great. Canyon Lake (Texas) and Landa Park (New Braunfels) are nice to see and both free, but a bit of a drive. There is also the Cibolo Creek park (free) in Boerne, which is a bit of a drive out of town, and if you want to just walk around shops, Comfort is a cute little town. The oldest dance hall in Texas is in Gruene, and that is a nice little place just north of New Braunfels. There is a wine bar there and little shops you can walk around. If you want to just drive, the hill country is pretty. Fredericksburg (Texas) is a local fave for a lot of people. Visually, it's dry and hot here. August is always when the high temps have hit hard and stuff is dying. :0) I hope you have fun. The people are so great and friendly, if not, they probably don't live here. ;0) Welcome to Texas!!

The Alamo. The Riverwalk, and most of the missions are free to the public. If you venture out of the City. I would recommend a hike up Enchanted Rock State Natural Area with a stay in Fredricksburg and visit to Lyndon B. Johnson State Park & Historic Site.

Go downtown to The PearlEl Mercado Snack Bar also is in downtown. The walk on the river is beautiful, go The Alamo and hear the story, that's what I suggest. Downtown has plenty of good hotels, visit the San Fernando Cathedral. There is also the Witte Museum, and the San Antonio Zoo.

All the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park and The Alamo is free. The Botanical Gardens are nice with the San Antonio Zoo in that area. Then you can always do the Pearl Parkway for dinner, drinks and a nice stroll.

The Riverwalk is downtown and beautiful, of course lots of restaurants and gift shops. The Alamo is close to the River Walk, the garden is wonderful, since San Antonio had that horrible weather I'm not sure about the garden. There's a Mexican Market, it is within walking distance. I use to go there and browse. There's a few Missionaries/ Missions around. If you are eating out, try Whataburger, Texas hamburger joint, Bill Millers is a chicken place, they have great Tea and you can get it in a large Bill Miller mug, it's yours to keep., must try Breakfast Taco/Burrito, my favorite is sausage, egg and egg with salsa... there's a large variety. I like going to smaller Mexican restaurants as they generally have fresh tortillas, be certain the place has a good business and in a safe area. There's many TexMex restaurants downtown. Ask locals for info, I lived there 17 years and loved it!
