When visiting Salt Lake, I would recommend a hotel that is on a TRAX line, the local light rail, which can whisk you to and from the Salt Lake City International Airport in 20 minutes for $2.50 each way. If you're going ultra luxury,

Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City - a Kimpton Hotel is a nice hotel in the heart of downtown. A little cheaper is the Salt Lake City Plaza Hotel . A few blocks south of downtown are several hotels - Crystal Inn, a Best Western and a Sheridan.
Why not try my guesthouse, Off-Broadway Studios for an extended stay or multiple rooms for up to 6 couples? These are adjacent private furnished corner units with various bed choices, kitchens, and full baths. Located out of the Hotel Zone, we are between the Salt Lake Temple and Trolley Square, between The Library Store and Governor's Mansion, between Salt Palace Convention Center and the Univ. of Utah. Salt Lake City starts at our doorstep, not three blocks away beyond surrounding hotels. Use TRAX light rail to arrive from the airport, take you to the UTA ski shuttles, and save steps riding free in the downtown area. (There's no point to staying at a ski resort, it's not far, it's very cold at night up there, and there's so much less to do up there when the lifts are closed. In Salt Lake we don't even decide if we are going skiing until we get up in the morning and see what the weather is like.)
Even on foot, here you can choose from 200 restaurants or get your produce from five major grocers to cook your own meals. Walk or TRAX to night life and don't get a DUI! Driving, we have 50 golf courses within 50 minutes for $50 or less-with a cart! We have golf clubs to borrow, N/C, and a couple bicycles, as well. Built by enthusiastic travelers, for independent travelers, we have more complete rooms, better location, better rates! Find us at off-broadwaystudios.com/ for rates, room choices, and things to do.

Hey there,
The The Grand America Hotel and The Little America Hotel Salt Lake City are located slightly outside downtown, but are upscale and classic, respectively. They also both reside within the UTA (public transportation) free fare zone, so you can hop on the light rail just outside the hotel and ride further in Downtown.
Other options include the Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown which is right next to the newly built City Creek Center (shopping/food) and the Radisson Hotel which is just a few blocks away but still very downtown.
Hope this helps!
