Places to see in Gold Rush Country enroute from Sacramento

We are a family of 4 - 2 kids, ages 10 and 9. We are going to a wedding next weekend in Humbug Valley. We are going there via Sacramento. Looks like we are heading thru Gold Rush Country, and some beautiful scenery. We are making a long weekend of it, starting in Sacramento. We need a place to stay in between Sacramento and Humbug Valley. Any recommendations of towns to stay, places to stay, and things to see? We want to make the most of 4 days in a part of the country we may never see again. Would love any feedback. Thanks!

Even though I have lived in Sacramento for 27 years I had to look up where Humbug Valley is. After looking at the map I would suggest going over to Truckee and Lake Tahoe on your way.  Truckee is a cute old town to explore which is about 20 minutes from the north shore of Lake Tahoe, where you could then take a cruise on the lake which departs from Tahoe City which is a great way to see the lake.  If you want to spend anytime in Sacramento I would suggest walking through "Old Sacramento Historic District" which is a touristy type of old western town.  The California State Railroad Museum is also interesting in Old Town as well as the California State Capitol Museum which has tours.  have fun!
