In Rome - headed to the coast!

Based out of Rome -- what would be the best place to go for a beach/coastal town excursion for one day?  Best would be a place accessible by train or other public transportation.  It will be July and we would love a relaxing location with amazing views first and foremost!

Dear Danielle,

you have to considered that Ostia (the Roman sea) isn't so extraordinary, so I think that you can go to the Monte Argentario near Orbetello in Maremma, using a train from ROMA Termini that need only 2 hours to go there. There is a train at 6,00 am that you can use to reach that place. You can use the website to calculate the itinerary from ROMA TERMINI up to Orbetello-Monte Argentario.

  1. Monte Argentario (attraction)
  2. Orbetello (city)

I'm not sure if it would be too far out of your way, but every single town along the Amalfi Coast is STUNNING. If you can get the Frecciarossa train it will only take 2 hours to get from Stazione Roma Termini to Salerno. From Salerno there are lots of buses that will take you along the coast. You can hop off pretty much at any of the towns and you will get breathtaking views, but one of the main towns is Amalfi and I'd highly suggest going there. This isn't much of a sit by the beach drinking maitais kind of beach area, but it's gorgeous nonetheless. The bus ride itself is beautiful, but be sure to take motion sickness meds if you're prone to getting car/bus/travel sick. It's quite the  trip, but sooooo worth it.

After you've spent the day wandering around the gorgeous villages eating and drinking to your heart's content, you can take a ferry back to Salerno to get a view from the water. Photo creds below: natgeo

Ostia (in Rome), Civitavecchia (about an hour from Rome) Sabaudia (about an hour from Rome) or my favorite daytrip - Isola del Giglio! The island is about 3 hours from Rome and can be reached by ferry out of Porto Santo Stefano. :)
