Katie from Los Angeles asked

Best free things to do in Rochester (New York)?

I'm going to be in Rochester (New York) next month and will be on a pretty tight budget. I'm looking for the best free and inexpensive things to check out! I love the outdoors, art, museums, you name it. Thanks!

Check out some of the walls from Wall Therapy . Graffiti artists from all over the world are invited each year to create a mural on walls around the city. http://wall-therapy.com/

While you're at it, I would check out the water tanks in the woods near the Cobbs Hill Reservoir. When you get up to where the reservoir is on your left, there's a little trail in the woods down to the right. Go down the path and take your first left and then a right to go up the hill.

If you want to get wet, go to the beach at Durand Eastman Park or Linear Park where there are some great wading areas.

Be sure to have a chocolate almond custard cone and a white (pork) hot. Don's Original or Schaller's Drive-In have both! iF you should go In The Spring Highland, park lilac festival is fabulous! I totally agree with the suggestions that have been made....Eastman School of Music is one of the best In The country.

The Strong National Museum of Play is one of are best museums in Rochester. It can be expensive, it depends on the visiting package you pick at the door. I don't think it's that expensive but this museum is a good pick. Then we have the Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo). I believe that's located on East Ave, we have a few museums to choose from.

Mendon Ponds Park is south of Rochester. Great hiking trails. The Memorial Art Gallery is a nice place to visit as well.

Beautiful thing about ROC is everything is within 15 minutes max & will work with your budget! Visit Ontario Beach - Lake Ontario in Charlotte (ROC lingo, Shar-Lot) beach, go to Abbott's Frozen Custard, take a walk out on the Charlotte Pier along the Mighty Genesee River to Lake Ontario. Durand Eastman Park, tour the Genesee Brew House, plenty of art & history. George Eastman Museum, The Strasenburgh Planetarium is across the street, Memorial Art GalleryEastman School of Music. If you're a fan of authentic Italian food on a budget, I highly recommend Rocky's for lunch. Everything is homemade. Family busy. It's an amazing hole-in-the-wall. Get there early! South of ROC an hour is Canandaigua Lake, part of the Finger Lakes. Wine tours are readily available. Hope this helps. If you've never been to ROC the natives are friendly & very proud of their city. Enjoy!!
