Dabs from Chicago asked

Where to stay and what to do for a 3 night stay before Galapagos?

We're going to be flying into Quito in the evening on Thursday so we will have Friday and Saturday to visit Quito, then we will fly to the Galapagos on Sunday.  I've tentatively got a place reserved in the centro historic, we're not real late night people so the lack of bars doesn't bother me but are there enough places to eat?  Or should we expect to have to take taxis to eat out?  Or should we stay in another district and take a cab to visit the centro historic?

Any good places for Ecuadorian cuisine either in the centro historic or elsewhere since taxis appear to be inexpensive?

It sounds like there is about a day's worth of sightseeing in the centro historic, what should we do with day 2?

Is the altitude a problem and should we expect that the 1st day we'll be dragging a bit?  It's pretty much an all day affair to get there from Chicago (transfer Miami)

According to my experience you must pre booked your hotels and later on hire local cab for a day to visit places near Quito. This helps you to organize your trip. You can visit up the side of an active volcano and Mitad del Mundo monument. You must visit the Plaza de Ponchos - Otavalo market in Otavalo as many people come here to eat and enjoy.

I have not faced any Altitude sickness problems, so cannot say any things about it. Local tour operators would be the great operation for travelling nearby places. There are so many things to explore: Like Most visitors concentrate their time in Old Town, for which UNESCO named Quito a cultural heritage site in 1978, Colonial Homes, The Middle Of The World, Quito Ecuador monument straddles the equator 22 km north of Quito. Enjoy Ecuadorian hospitality, history, cuisine and attractions at these haciendas, also called hosterías. Some are rustic, some are three, four and five star luxury establishments.

It is very important to take rest for enjoying a every minute of travel to make it memorable moments.

Hope this will help you.

Hi Kristi

Centro Historico is the best place in Quito, don´t change your hotel because if you stay here you can see it by night that is amazing. Taxis are really cheap so you can go eat anywhere in the city with no problem. The best restaurants in the historical part of Quito are Casa Gangotena, Hotel Plaza Grande, they both have traditional food. There is a place in the valley Cumbaya called Patria Restaurante that is ecuadorian fusion cuisine, the taxi ride is about 15 US but the surroundings are nice and it will be worth it. You can easily spent two days in Centro Historico, you have to go to Iglesia la Compañía and to Museo Casa del Alabado

The altitude could be a problema, what you would need is resting and if you can find Coca leaf tea that makes it better.

Have Fun!

Thanks for the reply, we have already been to Quito and have returned.  We stayed at the Casa El Edén which turned out to be fabulous, would highly recommend.  On day 1 we found the Free Walking Tour Ecuador which was an excellent way to visit the centro historico.  On day 2 our hotel arranged for a guide to take us to Otavalo to see the Saturday craft market and to Cascada De Peguche plus a few other stops to see handicrafts and llamas.

The altitude was not a problem for me except for a slight headache which aspirin took care of, my husband said that he was experiencing a little trouble with it breathing wise when he slept.
