Puerto Rico

12 days over Xmas in Puerto Rico- best places to go and things to see?

We are going to Puerto Rico for 12 days over Christmas. What are good cities to visit, places to eat and things to do? We arrive and leave from San Juan. We enjoy a mixture of tourist and authentic.

Vieques is pretty nice, but La Parguera you can actually swim in the bay. It's an amazing experience.

I'd suggest you visit Bacardi Distillery Entry

which is really neat to see.

Castillo San Felipe del Morrois really interesting too. A lot of history there.

Barrachina in old san juan is worth a visit, they claim to be the home of the pina colada, and theirs is really good. The other major claim to it is the Caribe Hilton, not a bad idea to visit their pool bar and have one.

Arecibo Observatory
is great to see, it's an amazing piece of construction.

Beachwise, I've always enjoyed Seven Seas Beach, and also Luquillo Beach Puerto Rico Top 10 Beach is pretty nice. for doing the "authentic" thing, eat at the kisoskos out front of the beach on the highway access road at the beach entrance.

Really depends on what you want to do, and how much you want to drive. The island is small, but most of the time you are driving more or less around the coastal areas. so getting to someplace that is 55 miles away as the crow flies can instead be a 2+ hour drive. The island is filled with history, fun things to do and awesome food. If you end up in Hato Rey, be sure to stop by my friend Javier Nassar's restaurant Tras-patio Bistro Puertorriqueño

it quite literally is my favorite place to eat anywhere, and i've eaten in many of the top restaurants throughout the US and carribean. He has a perfect touch on the foods, making small changes to traditional puerto rican recipes that really make them stand out. In many years of going there, there has not been a single dish anyone in the family got that wasn't excellent, even when the kids got something simple like a wrap or burger.

Speaking of, another spot to try is either Jendy's Heladeria or Heladeria El Grito . Both have similar offerings, they are just in different areas, Jendy's in Caguas, and El Grito in Lares. They do exotic ice creams, so flavors like corn, garlic, red bean, etc. They also do more normal flavors. The ginger ice cream at Jendy's is absolutely perfect.

If you end up in the Rincon area, Tamboo Beside the Pointe is a great spot to watch the sunset from

You must go to the island of Vieques and go to the Bioluminescent Bay on an electric boat. You may be able to go on a glass bottom boat as well of my own design as I captained boats here for over a decade, ask at the Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust for information about tours with scientists and marine biologists. You will never NEVER forget it it is the best in the world and not overrated but a MUST see. enjoy
