4 of us are planning a road trip the end of September.
What we would like our itinerary to look like is - Porto- 2 nights, then on to Lisbon- 2-3 nights- then cross over to Granada Spain (2 days) and then drive down to the Algarve for 5 days or so- our trip is 14 days.
We would like to stay in a 2 bedroom villa in the Algarve and our budget is approximately $40-80 euro a night for each couple.
We like history, quaint towns and points of interest. Beach in the Algarve
Any advice on the this itinerary wold be helpful- distance, recommendations of where to stay.
We would like to avoid highway as much as possible to we can enjoy the Area but are willing to take some highway to make it happen
Not sure about other cities, but in Porto, waiters just put food on the table and if you eat it, they ring it up. So if you don't want to pay for something have them take it away!!
I'd suggest that you work your way back from wonderful Granada via Seville. You could stay in that lovely city for a night or two and then travel onwards to Faro(well worth exploring) and the Algarve.
The Algarve has many, many beautiful beaches although much of the coast is very popular with holidaymakers (lots of concrete in e.g. Albufeira and Praia da Luz). Do visit Lagos (visitor-popular but still pleasant), Silves (good castle, lots of storks) and Sagres, which has some long stretches of lovely beach as well as some interesting historical sites nearby.
A couple of further points:
1. Use www.viamichelin.com to find route, route info, route options, distances and estimated timings. It's a pretty reliable tool.
2. Make sure you tell the hire company in advance that you want to take the car into Spain. You may have to pay an extra premium for doing so.
Enjoy your planning! :-)
