Places to see and things to do in winter :)

Hello!

Would appreciate suggestions on places to visit about town or not too far away from Porto. Let me know your favorite activities :) What is winter like?

Thank you.

Hiya!!!

Well, first of all Porto is a lovely city. Portugal is a very friendly country, specially the north, so you won't have any problem!

The best things to do in Porto are: walking around in the old town, a boat trip in Douro Marina (you'll find it the most beautiful landscape ever!), a visit to the Porto Wine Caves, or a great concert in Casa da Música. TRY THE FAMOUS FRANCESINHA (restaurants like Restaurante Capa Negra II or Café Santiago)!!

I highly recommend you to speak with the locals, because you'll find some awesome underground activities and places to visit that you'd never find out on the internet :D You'll make some new friends even!

If you're looking for another place to visit nearby, go to Aveiro. It's my hometown, very lovely, known by the Portuguese Venice ;D It's one hour from Porto by train, and the ticket is less that 10€ both ways. You'll find a lot of university students, a lot of Erasmus students as well, and a lot of FUN!

I hope you'll have a blast ;D;D;D

P.S. don't worry about the cold, you come from Ireland :p but don't forget a warm coat though.

Winter in northern Portugal can be quite wet, but it's pretty no matter what weather you have.

My favorite day trip from Porto is to the historic town of Guimaraes where Portugal was founded as a state in 1139. Guimaraes has one of the best preserved historical town centers in all Europe and is really attractive. You have a train going to Guimareas directly from Porto that takes about an hour. Make sure to take the train from the very scenic Porto (São Bento) train station that is a sight in itself becuase of it's rich decorations with portuguese tiles.
