Melody from Chicago asked

Sample itinerary from Portland to Chicago?

I'd love to drive I90/northern route. Having a hard time breaking up the trip into days. Has anyone done this drive and can share their itinerary?

*Update: I should add that Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore are on the list of things to see. I'd like to complete the drive in 5 days (4 nights). Breaking the bank is not an option :)

We did this from Portland to Milwaukie (we camped - this may not be your plan). We stopped in Moscow (Idaho) (to stay with friends) but then caught 90 in Coeur d'Alene and went to Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park in Whitehall (Montana)- great campground and did the cavern tour, then Yellowstone National Park/Tetons, we waved at Mt Rushmore but spent our time at Custer Park, Needles Hwy, and Wind Cave National Park Visitor Center, then camped outside of Sioux Falls, then Milwaukee.

From Portland, you can head up to Seattle, then one possible itinerary goes along I-90 from Seattle to Chicago over 4 days. You can play around with the map, like if you want to stay on I-90 you could go through Rapid City and Sioux Falls instead of Glendive and West Fargo. But once you get closer to Chicago, you probably want to come down from the North through Madison (Wisconsin) or Milwaukee. It really depends on how much time you have to explore stops, otherwise you could try to drive straight through some sections to save time.
