I'm planning a trip with some friends to the Portland area for summer of 2014. We are extreme lovers of nature! What are some rad things to do in the area, and what type of budget should we factor into our trip for extracurricular activities?
In the city:
Forest Park is an amazing place to explore. I have spent countless hours on its many trails and still have yet to see everything. It is quite the escape with many access points.
Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge is a nature reserve area that is great for birding and wildlife viewing.
Another great activity is to rent a Kayak from http://www.portlandrivercompany.com/
and explore some of the Willamette with views of the city interspersed with wildlife.
Mt. Tabor Park is another great park to explore with various trails and a great view of the city from on top.
With a car:
If you have a car this will open up many more nearby options for outdoor exploration. The biggest and closest nearby attraction is the
Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. If you have never experienced it, it is quite breathtaking. There are countless trails scaling the mountains and cliffs surrounding the
Columbia River. The most popular trails get a bit overcrowded on the weekends, but if you time during the week it is a must see.
Next up would be
The Oregon Coast. It is about 60-80 minutes away and is quite nice in the summer.
Budget can jump quickly depending on if you want to rent a car or not, if not you can explore Car2Go as an option for easy in city cab alternatives.
Hope you enjoy your time in Portland. It is great in the summer.
