Better city to visit on travels to Mount Rushmore

Planning to stay in Glenwood Springs 1st night (traveling to Mr. Rushmore) is there is a better city for (4)-20-year-olds to stop overnight (enjoy the sites)? They don't want to travel more than 10-hours departing from Phoenix on the 1st day. Thank you!

Phoenix (Arizona) Mt Rushmore (South Dakota)   Glenwood Springs (Colorado)

Phoenix to Glenwood Springs is a long nearly 9.5hr drive. I agree with the person who mentioned packing water. Moab is nice for a gorgeous stop but too hot after April/May. Glenwood Hot Springs Pool is a great pit stop after a long drive. If you stay at the Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge there is free pool, towels and hot breakfast. With 4 people in a two queen room it could make the room rate affordable.
Either way a solid 2day drive of nearly 9-10hrs each day. When in SoDak, look for rooms in Hill City, south Rapid City or Custer for lower rates near Mt Rushmore. Many hotels won't rent to kids under 21yrs.

I would go to Durango 1st Night. Leave at 4am. 1 case of water per person/pet. The 2nd night I would stay in Cheyenne. I prefer Hampton Inns, or Marriott. You can look up hotels on Hotwire.com as you travel. If you have a chain, sign up for the rewards, or think about getting their credit card. Be safe.
